Dear Mayor Nenshi and City of Calgary Councillors,

#KeepCalgaryStrong is a growing coalition of organizations and Calgarians that support the principle set out by City Council: cuts in the operating budget should do the least harm to Calgary’s most vulnerable and poor. We believe that if budget cuts are necessary, they should not compromise access to jobs, safety, education, health care and the social participation of those most dependent on City services. We respect the financial challenges confronting City Council. We find the principle of “doing least harm” is most critical in guiding decisions and establishing priorities. Any cuts in supports and services for those who are already vulnerable will only increase stress and trauma. Demands on community resources and support networks will only go up, not down. Losing needed City services for the less fortunate will weaken, not strengthen, our community.

We request that at its July 22, 2019 meeting, City Council allow #KeepCalgaryStrong coalition to express our concerns regarding the impact of cuts on our most vulnerable fellow citizens. Specifically, we are requesting that City Council:

1. Preserve services to the vulnerable and those on low incomes. (Concerning 122,000

2. Maintain current transit services and fare structure (Concerning 330,000 Calgarians)

3. Keep moving forward with Calgary’s mental health and addictions strategy. Specifically, this
includes providing adequate funding for effective implementation. (Concerning 260,000

We understand that the City needs to find savings. We suggest that the City consider for example pausing the expansion into 14 new suburbs and repurposing the business opportunity fund.

It is said that one can judge the vibrancy and strength of a community by how it supports its most vulnerable members; how effectively it brings them into greater participation with civic life. We support your stated commitment to build a strong and resilient city by doing the least harm to our most vulnerable citizens. We believe these requests will help you keep our city strong and vibrant. Thank you in advance for considering our request to speak to Council at its July 22, 2019 meeting. We welcome the opportunity to work together toward our shared goals.

Please keep the low income bus pass sliding scale. Many people including myself use it every day to go to school, to work, to buy groceries, to go to doctors appointments, and to see family and friends

Also please keep essential services (fire, police, transit, EMS, Roads) running so that people can travel and feel safe living here.

Please utilize old buildings whenever it’s safe to do so by making them into affordable homes. Don’t build new communities.

Please train Calgary Transit Access staff (drivers, supervisors, and dispatchers) to provide safe, courteous, affordable, accessible, and timely rides to people with disabilities. Encourage those who design the routes to make them more direct so that drivers aren’t wasting passengers time, and tax payers money on gas and diesel. Encourage Calgary Transit Access supervisors to let go of drivers and dispatchers who repeatedly mistreat and hurt the disabled. Please also let go of drivers who fail to comply with Alberta’s driving laws, including the law related to distracted driving.

Please advise Calgary Transit to build all of their stations with accessibility in mind so they don’t have to repeatedly renovate their buildings, bus stops, and vehicles in the future to meet the needs of our aging society.

I encourage our local government the City of Calgary to continue to work with the people living in Calgary, the provincial government, and the federal government to do 2 things:

    -make poverty history!

    - to make sure as people abilities change throughout their life span they can continue to be engaged and active participants in our society.

preserve the service you now have and do not diminish it further. no service to new neighborhoods would be preferable to cutting essential services to Transit, Police, Fire, EMS, Roads, Water etc. Defer public monies going to a new Flames Arena, or new Construction of Buildings but maintain road maintenance. No more rewarding the advantaged, and cutting essentials to the rest of us.

I endorse the concerns of #KeepCalgaryStrong; we need to ensure that budget cutbacks is not achieved on the backs of the most vulnerable.

I don’t have a car so I rely on transit, walking and biking. Keep public transit strong! This is a key tool to build an inclusive, climate-friendly, and prosperous Calgary!

Mental health and addiction challenge every family at some critical points in time, with significant adverse impacts on productivity, participation in city life, and creative contribution. It is the responsibility of all of us to build healthy environments with the necessary supports that pave the road to better health and interaction. Businesses rely on healthy environments. Work with everyone to ensure the operating budge meets our needs. Allow us both input and accountability to processes and commitments already in place.

Why not cut councillors positions first…then look at cutting management positions before looking at hurting the general public who use these services so they can actually earn a living wage.
